The Winter Edit: Exploring The Waterfalls of Marin
If you’re familiar with California weather, you know that our state deals with drought. So when in rains, we don’t complain. In fact, we plan our hikes around the rain so that we can enjoy the seasonal delight of waterfalls. If rain falls during your visit to Marin County, find a few hours between the showers and join us!
Here are our three favorite falls to explore during this time of year. The first two are short drives (or a walk in one case!) from our three Marin Hotels, and are easily accessible trails frequented by locals. The third one has lots of WOW appeal, and the drive to the trailhead is loaded with classic Marin County beauty. And since there is no better combination than a hike and a meal, we selected these three waterfall hikes for their proximity to excellent, fun, casual local restaurants.
1. Dawn Falls is folded into a neighborhood in Larkspur and is a hidden gem. Now you know! While you’re in the area, have a wander around downtown Larkspur. You’ll find coffee, pastries, wine, and pizza at Emporio Rulli, Backstage Wines, and Picco Pizzeria.
Pro Tip: the parking at the trailhead is limited. Go early or find a spot in the neighborhood and walk to the trailhead. Worth it! You will see homes of all types built around the Redwoods — literally. An only-in-Marin experience!
2. Cascade Falls is located just a 25 minute walk from Mill Valley Inn. You can easily walk to the falls before breakfast and you’ll probably have the trail to yourself. If you’re driving over from Waters Edge Hotel or Acqua Hotel, you’ll find street parking around the area. Since you’re in Mill Valley, stroll around downtown and enjoy lunch or dinner at our sister restaurant Piazza d’Angelo.
3. Cataract Falls is a popular destination for people from all over the Bay Area. It’s a short steep hike; your reward for the upward climb is cascading waterfall along the length of the trail. This destination is a further drive from our three hotels (about 14 miles from Mill Valley Inn, 21 from Waters Edge Hotel, 18 from Acqua Hotel), so plan to make a day of it by combining with lunch (try Mas Masa, we love their salads and tacos) or dinner and a movie in Fairfax after your hike.
