Southern Marin Sampler: Awesome Outdoors

Southern Marin Sampler: Awesome Outdoors

Looking for a day trip around Marin, to give a feel for this special place? Happy to help! We have selected five spots that highlight the big nature and small town vibe that is Marin County.

To keep this to a one-day adventure, we've selected spots fairly close together in Southern Marin. This way you're spending more time out of your car experiencing the destinations outdoors vs. spending a ton of time driving from place to place. This route is about 30 miles from the first to the last destination, and about 1:20 driving time. Plan on a total of 6-7 hours if you move at a pretty fast pace. We've arranged these in an order that makes sense in terms of the route, but you can reverse the order for the same effect.

BTW, we feel like we should warn you: after a day like this you're going to want to stay the night in Marin! Plan ahead, it's difficult to find a room at the last minute.

1. Muir Woods. Plunge in to this famous, fragrant, awe-inspiring spot. Make reservations first!

2. Muir Beach Overlook. Marin County has lots of places where you truly feel your spot on the edge of the continent. This is our favorite.

3. Stinson Beach. Stop for a picnic lunch on the beach, or dine in one of the town's restaurants followed by a walk on the beach.

4. Mill Valley. Classic Northern California town known for it's position amongst the Redwoods, it's charming shops and homes, and it's quality of life. We like: Equator Coffee if you're feeling the caffeine, Mill Valley Beerworks for some local brew, Piazza D'Angelo for cocktails and dinner Cal-Italian style and a ringside seat to the town square.

5. Marin Headlands. If you can time this spot for sunset, do it! Drive to the uppermost lookout (just keep heading up!) to watch the sun dip into the Pacific to your left and cast that golden hour glow on the Golden Gate Bridge to your right.
